What to notice
- Does it click, crank slowly, crank normally without catching, or do nothing at all?
- How long after shutting it off does it happen, and does it start if you wait?
- Is the check engine light on?
Common causes
- A starter that's wearing out, which can struggle more once it's hot. Often a single click or a slow crank.
- A weak battery or a corroded cable connection that shows up under load
- A fuel delivery problem, such as a weak fuel pump or a leaking injector, when it cranks normally but won't catch
- A faulty engine sensor, such as a crankshaft position sensor, which can fail when it heats up
What we do
We test the battery, starter and charging system, read the engine codes, and if needed check fuel pressure, so you replace the part that's actually failing. A battery test is $30 & up. If it also struggles on cold mornings, see our guide on a car that won't start in the cold.
