Belt work we do
- Serpentine (accessory drive) belt replacement
- Belt tensioner and idler pulley replacement
- Timing belt replacement at the manufacturer's interval
- Timing chain diagnosis and repair
- Water pump replacement, often done with a timing belt
The serpentine belt
This belt runs the alternator, the A/C and often the power steering and water pump. A worn belt squeals, especially on cold mornings, and cracks with age. If it breaks, the battery stops charging and the engine can overheat.
The timing belt
The timing belt keeps the engine's valves and pistons in step. Many engines have a set replacement interval in kilometres or years, listed in the owner's manual. On some engines a broken timing belt causes serious internal damage, so replacing it on schedule matters. Some engines use a timing chain instead, which usually lasts much longer but can stretch or rattle.
Belt questions
How much does a serpentine belt cost to replace?
Serpentine belt replacement is $100 & up. Timing belts and chains are quoted per vehicle, because the labour varies a lot between engines.
Why does my car squeal when I start it?
A worn or loose serpentine belt is the most common cause, especially on cold mornings. Our guide to cold-morning noises covers start-up problems in winter.
Does my car have a timing belt or a timing chain?
Check your owner's manual, or ask us and we'll look it up for your engine. If it has a belt, the manual lists when to replace it.
Should I replace the water pump with the timing belt?
On many engines the water pump is driven by the timing belt and sits behind the same covers, so replacing them together saves paying the labour twice. We'll tell you if that applies to your car.
