What a tune-up means today
- Spark plug replacement at the manufacturer's interval
- Ignition coil testing and replacement
- Engine air filter and cabin air filter
- Reading engine codes and checking for misfires
- A look at the throttle body, belts and hoses
Signs it's due
- A rough or shaky idle
- Hesitation or stumbling when you accelerate
- Worse fuel economy than usual
- Hard starting
- A check engine light, especially one that flashes
A flashing check engine light
A flashing light usually means an active misfire. Unburned fuel can overheat and damage the catalytic converter, so ease off, avoid hard acceleration and get it checked soon.
Spark plug and tune-up questions
How much does spark plug replacement cost?
Spark plug replacement is $120 & up. Engines where the plugs are hard to reach, such as some V6 engines, cost more. We confirm the price before we start.
How often should spark plugs be replaced?
It depends on the engine and plug type. Many modern iridium or platinum plugs last a long time, but the interval is in your owner's manual and we can look it up for your car.
Do I need a tune-up?
Not on a schedule like older cars did. Follow the maintenance schedule for plugs and filters, and come in if you notice a rough idle, hesitation or a check engine light. A check engine light scan is $30 & up.
