Suspension and steering work we do
- Suspension inspection on the hoist
- Shocks and struts
- Tie rods (inner and outer)
- Ball joints
- Control arms, bushings and sway bar links
- Wheel alignment after the parts are replaced
Signs something is worn
- A clunk or knock over bumps, potholes or streetcar tracks
- The car keeps bouncing after a bump, or dips hard when you brake
- Loose or wandering steering, or a steering wheel that isn't straight
- Uneven or cupped tire wear
- A pull to one side that an alignment alone doesn't fix
Why we inspect first
Different parts make similar noises. A clunk can be a sway bar link, a ball joint or a strut mount, and the prices are very different. We put the car on the hoist, find the part that's actually worn, and show you before you decide.
Worn suspension parts also throw an alignment straight back out, so we fix the parts first and align the car after.
Suspension and steering questions
How much does a suspension inspection cost?
A suspension inspection is $50 & up. Shocks, struts, tie rods and ball joints are quoted after the inspection, because the price depends on the vehicle and which parts are worn.
What's that clunking noise over bumps?
Common causes are worn sway bar links, ball joints, tie rod ends, strut mounts or control arm bushings. Our guide on clunking over bumps explains each one. A ball joint or tie rod that fails can affect steering, so have a new clunk checked soon.
Do I need an alignment after suspension work?
After replacing tie rods, struts or other steering and suspension parts that change the wheel angles, yes. It keeps the car tracking straight and stops uneven tire wear. A wheel alignment is $150 & up.
Can worn suspension fail a safety inspection?
Yes. Ontario's safety inspection checks suspension and steering parts for wear, looseness and damage. If you're getting a safety, we can check these first. See safety certificates and inspections.
