Ontario safety certificates, explained

A Safety Standards Certificate (often called a safety) shows that a vehicle met Ontario's minimum safety standards on the day it was inspected. We're a licensed Ontario inspection station at 810 Eastern Ave, so we can inspect your vehicle and issue one when it passes.

When you need one

  • Registering a used vehicle in a new owner's name and putting plates on it
  • Rideshare driving: Uber asks Toronto drivers for a certificate as part of its yearly vehicle inspection
  • Selling privately: many buyers ask for one, and it makes the sale easier

How long it lasts

A certificate is valid for 36 days from the inspection date, so get it close to when you plan to register the vehicle.

What gets inspected

  • Brakes
  • Tires and wheels
  • Steering and suspension
  • Lights, horn, wipers and windshield
  • Body and frame, including rust that weakens the structure
  • Exhaust and other safety items set out by the Ministry of Transportation

A safety is not a full check-up

A certificate only covers minimum safety items on the day of the inspection. It doesn't tell you how healthy the engine or transmission is or what repairs are coming. If you're buying a used car, get a pre-purchase inspection ($100 & up) as well.

If it doesn't pass

We show you what failed and quote the repairs before doing any work. You choose whether we fix it here.
